Chapter Twelve
SUVI Awakened
Amanda awakened alone in the bed. Startled, she sat up to see Suvi-jean sitting cross-legged on the floor, her eyes closed, and breathing deeply. âGood morning, are you meditating already?â
âIs that what itâs called?â that voice was rich and full of confidence.
Amanda swallowed hard as Suvi-jean opened her eyes, they were a glowing amber. With a liquid grace she rose to her feet and favored Amanda with a bright smile. âGood morning, my exquisitely beautiful companion. Iâve done as you asked and released the huntress.â
âThe huntress?â
âI thought it would sound less scary than the warrior, my precious delight. My oath, you are so utterly perfect, can I keep you?â
Amanda laughed at Suvi-jeanâs teasing smile as those amber eyes returned to their natural green. âYes you can, and so you must. Did you know your eyes turn amber when you meditate?â
âThey do when I focus on the power of the SUVI, yes. I know we have a meeting with the captain, but is there time for food first, my treasure?â
âThere is if we hurry. Get dressed and weâll go.â Amanda swiftly washed her face and started to pull on her uniform. She felt the eyes on her and turned to see Suvi-jean watching her. âHurry, get dressed,â she admonished, blushing deeply. Grinning, Suvi-jean pulled on her uniform and stepped into her shoes, then held the door open for Amanda.
They walked to the mess hand in hand then gathered food and joined their friends at the table. Jake watched them approach and nodded. âHey there, warrior woman, whereâs my little sister?â
âSheâs right here, Jake, safe and sound as you promised,â smiled Suvi-jean, as she gently squeezed his arm. âShe just invited me out to play.â
âOkay, if you say so. Can I ask whatâs going on?â
âMandy convinced me to stop trying to be human and be what I am, a SUVI woman. Iâm thinking that perhaps I can integrate your little sister into the whole picture. What do you think?â
âI think youâre scary as hell like this.â
âWhy, Jake? What is it about me that frightens you? You must know Iâd never harm a friend, especially not you.â
He looked thoughtful for a moment. âIt must be a combination of things, Jeannie. You exude confidence, and danger. Is projecting that a SUVI talent, or is it just something you developed yourself?â
âIâve never actually thought about it,â she replied, âbut you could be right. Iâll see if I can pull it back a bit. So, did I see you coming out of Carlaâs quarters this morning?â
Carla turned to her, blushing furiously. âWhat? How could youâ¦? Woman, thatâs it for you. Youâre getting way too good at this teasing thing.â
Suvi-jean leaned over and kissed Carla on the cheek. âYouâre adorable when you blush.â
âStop it, Jeannie. Mandy, make her behave. Hal, protect me.â
âWhoa, leave me out of it, Iâm still recouping.â
Suvi-jean smiled and took a deep breath, her eyes had gone amber again. âYou three have no idea how precious you are to me. Hal, youâre
